How Much Does a Bail Bondsman Cost in Raleigh?

When someone is arrested in Raleigh or Wake County, one of the first questions families ask is: How much will it cost to get them out of jail?

The answer depends on the bond itself and the circumstances surrounding the case.

Understanding the difference between the bond amount and the bail bondsman's premium is especially important.

Bond Amount vs. Bail Bond Premium

The court determines the defendant's bond and conditions of release. A bail bondsman does not decide how high or low that bond will be.

For example, if a defendant receives a secured bond, the family may have different options for satisfying the conditions of release.

One possibility is working with a licensed bail bondsman.

The amount paid to a bondsman is not the same thing as paying the entire bond directly to the court.

North Carolina regulates bail bond premiums. The North Carolina Department of Insurance states that the premium for a bail bond may not exceed 15% of the amount of the bond.

Does Every Raleigh Arrest Require a Bondsman?

No.

Depending on the release conditions, a defendant might receive:

  • A written promise to appear

  • An unsecured bond

  • A secured bond

  • Other conditions imposed by a judicial official

A professional bondsman should first determine whether the bond is one they can actually assist with.

Is Collateral Always Required?

Not necessarily.

Whether collateral is requested can depend on factors such as:

  • Bond amount

  • Nature of the charges

  • Defendant's residence

  • Employment

  • Court history

  • Previous failures to appear

  • Strength of the cosigner

  • Overall risk associated with the bond

Before providing collateral, understand exactly when and under what conditions it will be returned.

What Should You Ask Before Paying?

Ask the bondsman:

What is the premium?

Are there additional charges?

Is collateral required?

What happens to the collateral when the case ends?

What happens if the defendant misses court?

What responsibilities does the cosigner assume?

Get the agreement in writing and keep your receipts.
